This PhD skill course will teach you how to build on your strengths and will provide you with tools and strategies that will help you to further develop efficient and effective work.At this course you will learn how to identify unproductive work habits in your own work-life, set realistic goals and make a plan to reach them, apply strategies to become more efficient in your everyday work, and also to identify distractions and take the right measures in a busy workweek.

Prerequisites

We recommend that you are at least 6 months into your PhD. To benefit the most from this course we also recommend that you are curious about your own work habits and want to try out new tools and strategies to become even more efficient.
 
Aim

In this PhD skill course we build on your strengths and provide you with tools and strategies so you can further develop efficient and effective work habits.

Content

At each session you will set a work-goal for the following week. You will have time to reflect on your work habits and how you can optimize them. Sharing experiences and learning from each other is an important part of the course.
 
The course format combines discussions in smaller groups with plenary sessions on:
 
SESSION 1- Monday 11 March:
Realistic goalsetting – how to set realistic work-goals and identify patterns and beliefs that prevent your progress. 
 
SESSION 2 - Wednesday 20 March:
Collaboration – learn how to get the best out of your supervision and other work relationships.
 
SESSION 3 - Friday 5 April:
Writing – learn how to overcome writing blocks, write efficiently, control your inner critic.
 
SESSION 4 - Tuesday 16 April: Deep work – learn how to become focused and more efficient in a distracted world.  
 
SESSION 5 - Thursday 25 April: Sustain your progress – make a plan for sustaining your progress and establish a support network.AC
 
All days from 8.30 to 11.00 in KL 1.43 (first floor), Kilen
 
 
Structure of each session:

  • Follow up on last week’s goals – what did you find easy and what was challenging?    
  • Theme of the day workshop: presentation, exercise and discussions  
  • Goalsetting for the coming week

Please bring computer, charger, pen, and paper.
 
 
Teaching Style
 
The course alters between short plenary presentations, group discussions and exercises. 
 
 
Learning Objectives

After this course the PhD student is able to:

•    Identify unproductive work habits in your own work-life
•    Set realistic goals and make a plan to reach them
•    Apply strategies to become more efficient in your everyday work
•    Identify distractions and take the right measures in a busy workweek


Course Literature
 
No mandatory reading is required for this course. Relevant literature, videos and blogpost will be shared at the course.
 
Language

The course is taught in English.

No-show fee

If you cancel your registration after the registration deadline or you do not participate in the full course DKK 2,000 will be deducted from your PhD funds and in case insufficient PhD funds are available, you will be asked to transfer the remaining amount to CBS.
